What Java is required for NetBeans 7.3 IDE

For installing and running NetBeans 7.3 IDE is required Java 7 Update 10 or newer, or Java 6.

How do I know what version of Java I have installed?

The best way how to get what Java is installed is using a Mac native tool /usr/libexec/java_home.

  • Open Terminal
  • Invoke /usr/libexec/java_home and then check the result.

For start the NetBeans Installer and for run IDE launcher you need the tools returns either jdk1.7.0_10, or jdk1.6.0.

Where is Java Preferences panel?

After applying Software Update Java for OS X 2012-006 1.0 - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5493 - Mac OS X users are no longer able to use the Java Preferences application to specify the version of Java that is used by applications. After applying the update, NetBeans IDE runs on the most recent version of Java that is installed.

I have installed the latest Java using Java Control Panel and it still doesn't work. Why?

Java Control Panel is not a tool for installing Java on the Mac system, it's a control panel for Java Applet Plugin for Web browsers. Let's download and install the latest Java from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
