Attempt to connect to remote database on Macintosh gets "SOCKS server has bad version" error. How can I resolve this?

On some Macintosh computers, attempting to add a data connection in order to connect to a remote database, such as Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, Sybase, or DB2, results in the following error message:

Error establishing socket to host and port: hostname:_port#_ Reason: Reply from SOCKS Server has bad version

The problem happens if a SOCKS proxy was enabled when proxies for Internet access were configured via System Preferences > Network > Proxies.

Solution: Disable the SOCKs proxy.
