How can I install on the Linux or Solaris platforms if I get a message saying, "The installer is unable to run in graphical mode..."?

If installing as root on the Solaris or Linux platforms, sometimes the Installer may not start correctly in GUI mode, and instead prints the following message:

      The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. 
      Try running the installer with the -console or -silent flag.

This message appears if the DISPLAY variable is not set, even if the Installer is run on the local machine. Make sure the DISPLAY variable is set to :0.0 if running on the local machine.
