Netbeans 5.5/6 comes already with conservative default settings. In my opinion the configuration is not optimized for an average developer machine (CPU > 1.5GHz, RAM > 1 GB). I played a little bit with the configuration and was able to significantly improve the performance. I described the changes in the following post

What I also do not like is the default location of the metadata and workspace. It points to "document and settings" folder. Some companies have size limitation for this folders, which can cause strange problems.

Another thought: I prefer the archive over the binary distribution, but the archive-dist is a little bit hidden. From my perspective it should be available in parallel (at the same level) to the binary one.
