Do I Need a Database Server?

Yes you do need a database server. If you installed a version of NetBeans that includes GlassFish, if you have installed GlassFish, or if you have installed the JavaTM Platform, Standard Edition 6 Development Kit (JDK) then you already have the Java DB (also known as Derby) database server.

You can also download and install one of the free database servers, such as MySQL. Many Ruby users like SQLite, but note that you cannot use SQLite with JRuby, yet (Update: see http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/JRUBY-2438 for a patch). For more information about database servers that you can use with Rails applications, check out Ruby on Rails Database Drivers.
