Q: Application doesn't start, what's wrong?

A: The problem might be incorrectly detected proxy settings by Web Start client. Proxy settings are supposed to be detected from browser settings by default, but there might be some situations where the detection fails. Start Java Control Panel either from Windows Control Panel or from command line. On windows execute command:

(jre install dir)\bin\javacpl.exe

on linux execute command:

(jdk install dir)/jre/bin/jcontrol

and verify that Network Proxy Settings are set correctly. If there is 'Use Browser settings' you might want to provide explicit proxy server.

Q: I'm using Switch Proxy plugin in Firefox and application doesn't start, what's wrong?

A: The problem is basically the same as above. We encountered not correctly detected proxy settings from browser when using Switch Proxy plugin for Firefox. The problem can be fixed as above.

Q: Question from project author: How can I let the project be opened even if the JDK of correct version is not installed?

A: You can add some scripting into the web page with the link to actually make it possible to install correct version of Java, for details see article Auto-Install: Easier Launching of Java Web Start Applications User will have to install NetBeans then to be able to open the project of course.

Q: What versions does the application need?

A: You need at least JDK version 1.5 to run NetBeans IDE, however the application will start on JDK 1.4 and tell user it needs higher version.

Q: Is it safe to run the application?

A: The application is digitally signed using self-signed certificate, source code is available in NetBeans CVS under module ide/projectopener.
