How do I debug an applet?

Since applet behavior is strongly influenced by the web browser in which it runs, best to embed the applet in a web application (which could be simply static HTML pages).

Integrating an Applet in a Web Application

Applets run in the JVM of the web browser. The IDE itself uses a different JVM and therefore applets are not immediately accessible from a web application's debug session. When the applet runs in the context of a web browser, we need to use remote debugging. Remote debugging of applets presently requires substantial manual setup.
