Database Tooling Competitive Analysis
This page captures our analysis of popular database tools. The focus is primarily on getting good ideas from these tools, although we also want to know if there is anything seriously missing from NetBeans that would cause developers using databases to choose other tools.
The popular database tools for developers are:
- NetBeans - David -- yes, we should see how well NetBeans does these things.
- Eclipse with QuantumDB plugin - David
- Eclipse with MyEclipse Database Explorer - David
- Microsoft Access - David
- Oracle JDeveloper - David
- Toad - John
- DB Visualizer - John
- SQLYog - David
- SQL Workbench - John
- Eclipse Data Tools Platform - John
When looking at these tools, we are evaluating how well they support the key tasks of database developers. The analysis should include a description of how these tasks are performed, if at all, and screen shots where it makes sense to show particularly useful functionality/features. A template for the analysis is provided here.
There are also a number of entity-relationship modeling tools, but those are less of our focus right now:
- ERWin
- ER Studio
- Microsoft Visio
