CVUT students accessibility testing

Students of CVUT are going to work on accessibility testing of NetBeans IDE. This document is intended as a specification of the work range.

Students groups

Students are distributed to 7 groups:

  • 6 groups will perform testing of NetBeans IDE without mouse (mouseless testing)
  • 1 group (working in pairs) will execute tests without screen, just listening output from screen reader (screen reader testing)

The range of testing is based on going through a tutorials/test specifications - each group will cover different tutorials/test specifications, all students from the same group are independently running same tutorial/test specification. All problems found during the testing are reported to IssueZilla bug tracking system.

Mouseless testing

Setup:

  • download and install JDK6 Update 5
  • download and install full distribution of NetBeans IDE 6.1 - select your Platform in combo box and push Download button down in All column
  • Run NetBeans IDE
  • unplug mouse

Testing instructions:

  • go through tutorial/test specification without mouse - all actions doable by mouse must be reachable also from keyboard
  • see conventions for keyboard activation and navigation in Java Look And Feel
  • NetBeans shortcuts shortcuts can be found in NetBeans main menu Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts Card
  • report any problem to IssueZilla (accessibility, usability, focus related defects )
  • reporting problems:
  • register and log in
  • report problem - don't forget to add the url of tutorial/test specification to the issue description (already reported problems)
  • Please write reports in English

  • 5 most active reporters(those report valid issues = evaluated issue not closed as INVALID/WONTFIX/WORKSFORME/DUPLICATE/INCOMPLETE) will win original NetBeans T-shirts

Screen reader testing

Setup:

  • download and install JDK6 Update 5
  • download and install full distribution of NetBeans IDE 6.1 RC1
  • install latest Demonstration Version of JAWS for Window (evaluation version works 15 minutes then the restart of computer is required)
  • install Java Access Bridge 2.0.1
  • Run JAWS for Windows
  • Run NetBeans IDE
  • unplug mouse
  • switch off display
  • plug earphones to the sound card

Testing instructions:

  • go through the tutorial specification and listen to the instructions read by the JAWS screen reader
  • see conventions for keyboard activation and navigation in Java Look And Feel
  • NetBeans shortcuts shortcuts can be found in NetBeans main menu Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts Card
  • if you are lost report a problem - try to switch monitor on for a while, switch it off and continue
  • report any problem to IssueZilla (accessibility, usability, focus related defects )
