71WindowSystemEnhancements

List of window system changes and enhancements planned for NetBeans 7.1:

Contents

Minimize the whole docking area

It should be possible to minimize all windows opened in the same docking area (e.g. the 'output mode') with a single mouse click or using a single menu action. When a new window belonging to output area opens, it will show either docked in the output area or minimized with other output windows. This behavior should be configurable either on the whole window system level or per docking area.

Drag and drop the whole docking area

It should be possible to drag all windows opened in the same docking area (e.g. the 'output mode') and drop them to a new location. All windows belonging to output area will open in the new location from now on.

Undock (floating) the whole docking area

It should be possible to undock all windows opened in the same docking area (e.g. the 'output mode') and make them floating as tabbed window in a single frame window. All windows belonging to output area will open as floating from now on. It should be also possible to dock the floating windows back to their original location - either all floating windows or just a single selected window.

Role-based configurations

Window system should provide support for multiple window layouts - also known as 'perspectives' or 'roles'. Each role should be able to override any default window systems settings - window location, window state (opened/state) etc. User's modifications to window system layout should be save and restored according to current role. It means window system changes in one role do not affect window layout in other role.
